Dead Person of the Day – September 11 – Peter Tosh

0 Comments 11 September 2012

We’re back with a bang. Today’s DPD – Peter Tosh.

With all due respect to Mr. Marley, Peter Tosh was soul brotha #1 in The Wailers. Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingstone and Bob Marley were the founding members of the band that was to bring reggae music to world stage.

The Wailer came on the scene with an explosion. After the release of Catch A Fire it was clear the sky was the limit. With great success came great sacrifice. With their recent success Marley (at the direction of Island Record’s Chris Blackwell) became the focus of the band, took more of a leadership role and band became Bob Marley & the Wailers instead of just The Wailers. The other founding members (Tosh and Livingstone) split and rest, as they say, is history.

When comparing bodies of work its plan to see Tosh was the musical influence and director behind The Wailers early success while Marley championed the lyrics. Tosh’s work is more melodic, experimental and overall just a bigger sound.

Do yourself a favor today and look up some old footage of Mick Jagger and Tosh (or just click here)
