Dead Person of the Day – May 22 – Thurl Ravenscroft

No Comments 22 May 2012

Folks,

Today’s DPD was the embodiment of the American dream whose velvety voice still makes my mouth water for the deliciousness of Frosted Flakes.

Thurl Ravenscroft.

A Nebraska native he moved out to la la land during the golden age of Hollywood of the mid 1930s. He gained some initial success in a barbershop quartet of sorts singing back up for such artists as Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby.

By 1940 his group – with Ravenscroft as the clear star – caught a break by recording a song for the Walt Disney picture Pinocchio. The song was later cut but that opportunity was to serve as a springboard for bigger and better things with Disney. He went on to appear in literally every other Disney movie for the past 50 years…just check out his wiki.

This opened up many doors for him. He once said “”I did the commercials for Gillette during the World Series and at one point I had 27 different beer contracts.”

Interestingly enough the roles he’s most known for were un-credited. He was the robust voice of Tony the Tiger so confidently decrying how supremely awesome that delicious treat truly was. Additionally he was the succulent voice behind You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch that – to this day – is my favorite Christmas song because I’m positive my heart is filled with unwashed socks.

Now, pick up your pancakes and obits at the counter.

ESCONDIDO — Thurl Ravenscroft’s rich voice dipped low and deep as he began to utter what has become the trademark of his 50-year show business career.

“They’re g-r-r-r-eat!!!” Ravenscroft boomed as he recreated the role of Tony the Tiger, a role that the 73-year-old has performed in scores of television commercials for a cereal company for 36 years. Continue
