Dead Person of the Day – January 24 – Peter Gzowski

No Comments 24 January 2013

Ah, Canada.

What a strange and intriguing place. There’s a whole bunch of stuff going on up there that we – down here in America – aren’t privy to. Which brings me to today’s DPD: Peter Gzowski.

Gzowski was a rumpled host of a national radio program in Canada whose gentle, homey tones gave voice to a generation of Canadians searching for their national identity. At our last inquiry Canadians were still looking for that identity.

Gzowski was the ‘voice of Canada’ for over 3 decades. So, had Canada ever had anything to say, Gzowski would have articulated it (gruffly).

Largely unknown in the United States, Mr. Gzowski (pronounced ZAH-ski) was instantly recognizable to Canadians and loved by many. His most popular radio program was ”Morningside,” which ran from 1982 to 1997. It was a three-hour-a-day heap of interviews, comments and Canadian oddities (like privatized healthcare, Wayne Gretzky and meat on a stick).

Grab a bowl of gravy, pixie sticks are over on the table and get your obits below.
