As seen through the spectrum of music(and most certainly beyond in my opinion) Max Roach was a righteous dude.
In the 1950s and 60s revolution in jazz music in America Roach set the standard for percussion. And one could argue he was a beacon in the world of socially conscious musicians.
Roach was a foundational part of Charlie Parker’s sound of the 1940s. He also participated in Miles Davis’ “Birth of Cool” sessions in 1949-50.
In 1972, he became one of the first jazz musicians to teach full time at the college level when he was hired as a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. And in 1988, he became the first jazz musician to receive a so-called genius grant from the MacArthur Foundation.
