Clarity

Staring at you, staring at me

The monolith
of the mind
can be
confusing as shit
but
what does it define?
The dimming
of the
light
makes the
picture
clearer.
the mind
takes memories
and files
them away
in the voluminous
cabinets of
the Hallways of Always
only to be recounted
and called
front and center
for questioning
when shards of nostalgia
poke and prick our brain fuzz.

at first venerable
but always vulnerable
these counties in
the United States of Memory
get probed.
examined
shaped and
most of all,
inflated.
Balloons
of manifestations
blown up
with cosmic
mind gas
that doesn’t necessarily
recall the original situation.

The recollection,
the mind’s seemingly
transcendent touch,
dulls the original
like the hands
of the faithful on
La Pieta’s feet.

And like the idol’s
well fondled appendages
hopeful pilgrims
don’t channel
Michelangelo’s
original manifesto.
They scratch and sniff
the sorrow
hopes
prayers
and accumulated lore
of all who have come
before.
and is that the point?

a violated memory is
nothing more than a
sleek, lacquered
extremely defined
yet somehow nebulous
copy of what you
started out with
